Dark Distance, 1959 Ivon Hitchens
A prolific painter whose work spanned six decades, Ivon Hitchens was an early member of the 'Seven and Five' society.
Hitchens moved from London during WW2 to West Sussex where he painted what was in front of him, large colourful landscapes.
Rye Art Gallery has two large landscapes by the painter in their permanent collection 'The Lake' and 'Dark Distance'.
Throughout his career Hitchens explored landscapes creating artworks that did not simply simply document but captured the emotions of the places. He once commented
'Art is not reporting - it is memory'
