Angie Braven
Angie Braven | Painter
Angela Braven, was painting and drawing from an early age, at sixteen she first studied painting, sculpture and print-making at Hammersmith College of Art which merged with the Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1975.
Angie went on to teach at Chelsea alongside, Stuart Brisley, Ruskin Spear and Carel Weight. Her most famous student there was the film artist Steve McQueen. She went on to teach at Ravensbourne College of Art and Battersea Arts Centre.
Since the early seventies Angie has been exhibiting her work widely in galleries throughout the UK. Her sources of influence include her travels to India, Northern Africa, Spain and Greece; visually evocative writers such as Nabakov and Marquez, dreams and their echoes.
Angie is particularly well known for the joy and vibrant colours of her seaside garden paintings and the fishing beach at Hastings Old Town.
However, her recent narratives have been focussed on relevant gender issues, these are the works we have selected for Rye Art Gallery. Wives and sex for sale and the horror of female genital mutilation (FGM).
