John Doyle MBE RWS, was born in Sydenham Hill, he studied at Maidstone College of Art where his tutors included Gerrard de Rose and Paul Wyeth and privately John Ward. Doyle has exhibited in Canterbury Cathedral and in 1977 painted a picture for Archbishop Coggan which was presented to Pope Paul. He has shown at Spink and Son, London, and was elected a member of the RWS in 1977. He has exhibited in the Royal Academy summer exhibitions since the 1960s. From the summer of 1987 to the following spring he journeyed down the Thames in a small cabin cruiser painting landscapes, villages, towns and cities for his book. Soon after John visited India and fell in love with the country and its people, so much so that he gave paintings to the Maharaja of Jodhpur's famine appeal, these were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1989. A prize-winner in the 1994 Singer Friedlander Watercolour Exhibition he has more recently shown at the Catto Gallery, Hampstead, Chris Beetles Gallery, London and he was elected President of the RWS, 1997-2000. Doyle has been awarded an MBE for services to art.
